I stuck my key into Liamâs door, but it didnât turn. I frowned and tried again. Nothing. What the hell? I rang the doorbell, but he didnât open. I fished out my phone and called him.
âDid you find out anything?â he asked.
âYes. Iâm at your place.â
âYouâre here?â
âYeah. Donât make me wait long.â
I hung up and sent a text to Kit.
Sully: Are you okay?
Kit: Iâm good. But when you get home, can we play?
I closed my eyes, relief coursing through me. Since his abduction, every time Iâd brought up playtime, heâd said he wasnât in the mood. Iâd deferred to his wishes each time, although I was concerned that he was shunning the space where he found such happiness and comfort.
The door opened, and Liam appeared. âWhy didnât you tell me you were coming?â
âWhy? You gave me a key. Which no longer works, by the way. You changed your locks.â
âI did.â
âWhy?â
He shrugged. âThese are harder to pick. Are you coming in or staying out there?â
I gestured at the two half-empty beer bottles on the coffee table. âYou have company.â
âI had company.â He brushed by me and snatched up the bottles. âYou know, a booty call.â
âAt two in the afternoon. Youâve been quite busy lately, havenât you? Same guy?â
âWhatâs this interest in my sex life?â I followed him to the kitchen, where he poured the remainder of the beer in the sink, then threw the bottles in the recycle bin.
âJust curious about who captured your attention.â
âLike I said, just a booty call, so not worth mentioning. The sex is good right now, and thatâs all that matters.â
âDid you vet him?â
âAre you telling me how to do my job, Sullivan?â He took out a bottle of beer from his fridge and tossed it at me. âYouâve never ridden me this much about who Iâve slept with in the past.â
âSorry. With all the problems we have, I just donât want us to be careless.â
âThis guyâs solid, okay? No way heâs a plant. Now tell me whatâs up before we get into an argument about how suspicious you are of me lately. I thought you trusted me.â
âI donât mean to come off that way, Liam, but you and Iâ¦we donât keep secrets from each other. Donât start now. Itâs already bad enough that Kit does.â
âYour change of topicâs giving me whiplash.â Liam braced his elbows on the counter behind him. âWhat do you want to start with? Kit, or you tracking down this guy on your own?â
âI got him to talk.â I explained what Iâd learned that afternoon.
âFuck, that Ghost guy works for the Grimaldos? Thatâs too much of a coincidence, right? Are you thinking the Grimaldos know about Kit?â
âThatâs what I thought at first, but on the ride here, I gave it serious consideration, and I honestly donât know.â
âWhat do you mean?â
I popped the cap of the beer off and took a gulp. âAccording to the bouncer, this is something Ghost did every week.â
âFuck. Can you imagine how many boys he would have succeeded with, Sullivan?â
Itâd crossed my mind.
