I stuck my key into Liam’s door, but it didn’t turn. I frowned and tried again. Nothing. What the hell? I rang the doorbell, but he didn’t open. I fished out my phone and called him.

“Did you find out anything?” he asked.

“Yes. I’m at your place.”

“You’re here?”

“Yeah. Don’t make me wait long.”

I hung up and sent a text to Kit.

Sully: Are you okay?

Kit: I’m good. But when you get home, can we play?

I closed my eyes, relief coursing through me. Since his abduction, every time I’d brought up playtime, he’d said he wasn’t in the mood. I’d deferred to his wishes each time, although I was concerned that he was shunning the space where he found such happiness and comfort.

The door opened, and Liam appeared. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

“Why? You gave me a key. Which no longer works, by the way. You changed your locks.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

He shrugged. “These are harder to pick. Are you coming in or staying out there?”

I gestured at the two half-empty beer bottles on the coffee table. “You have company.”

“I had company.” He brushed by me and snatched up the bottles. “You know, a booty call.”

“At two in the afternoon. You’ve been quite busy lately, haven’t you? Same guy?”

“What’s this interest in my sex life?” I followed him to the kitchen, where he poured the remainder of the beer in the sink, then threw the bottles in the recycle bin.

“Just curious about who captured your attention.”

“Like I said, just a booty call, so not worth mentioning. The sex is good right now, and that’s all that matters.”

“Did you vet him?”

“Are you telling me how to do my job, Sullivan?” He took out a bottle of beer from his fridge and tossed it at me. “You’ve never ridden me this much about who I’ve slept with in the past.”

“Sorry. With all the problems we have, I just don’t want us to be careless.”

“This guy’s solid, okay? No way he’s a plant. Now tell me what’s up before we get into an argument about how suspicious you are of me lately. I thought you trusted me.”

“I don’t mean to come off that way, Liam, but you and I…we don’t keep secrets from each other. Don’t start now. It’s already bad enough that Kit does.”

“Your change of topic’s giving me whiplash.” Liam braced his elbows on the counter behind him. “What do you want to start with? Kit, or you tracking down this guy on your own?”

“I got him to talk.” I explained what I’d learned that afternoon.

“Fuck, that Ghost guy works for the Grimaldos? That’s too much of a coincidence, right? Are you thinking the Grimaldos know about Kit?”

“That’s what I thought at first, but on the ride here, I gave it serious consideration, and I honestly don’t know.”

“What do you mean?”

I popped the cap of the beer off and took a gulp. “According to the bouncer, this is something Ghost did every week.”

“Fuck. Can you imagine how many boys he would have succeeded with, Sullivan?”

It’d crossed my mind.
